What is #10Questions
Thanks for joining us today, Betsy! Are you ready to answer #10Questions?
"Thank you for having me! I'm glad to join folks for an opportunity to answer questions."
You are so welcome! We're excited to talk with you. 😃
Q1: Here’s the first question we ask everyone: What inspired you to run for office? #10Questions #OH14
"I never thought I would run for Congress. But last year, when our Congressman refused to hold a public Town Hall ahead of the vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, I decided that #OH14 needed new leadership."
Q2: Cleveland’s unemployment rate is 4.7%, and the Lordstown GM plant may lay off 1500 workers. You wrote a piece for the @washingtonpost – the passage in the screenshot below really hit the nail on the head. How will you protect workers and create jobs in #OH14? #10Questions
"As an employment lawyer, protecting #OH14 workers is a top priority. There’s a lot we need to do to create good-paying jobs, including raising the minimum wage and supporting organized labor. We also need to invest in workforce development so businesses have workers they need to grow."
Q3: You're a longtime member of @SierraClub and have worked to preserve urban green spaces. You recently tweeted a NYT article about the Cuyahoga River catching fire in 1969. What are your plans to protect the environment? #10Questions #OH14
"I’m glad you ask – just today we announced that we’ve been endorsed by the @SierraClub. As someone who cares deeply about our environment, it’s disappointing that our Congressman consistently votes against clean air and clean water initiatives. #OH14 voters deserve better. In Congress, I’ll fight for expanded resources for our Great Lakes to protect drinking water, boost local economies, and create jobs. We need leaders who'll stand up to Scott Pruitt and his mission to dismantle our EPA and roll back important policies that protect #OH14 communities."
Q4: Ohio has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic. A lawsuit filed by Teamsters in WV and OH claims workers in physically demanding jobs are especially vulnerable to opioid abuse. What’s your plan to combat opioid addiction and protect healthcare in #OH14? #10Questions
"I applaud the @Teamsters for standing up to these pharma companies who have exacerbated this problem. To solve the opioid crisis, it will take everyone doing their part, but there are important steps we can take. We need to enhance local treatment recovery options, strengthen prevention efforts, and expand programs designed to educate our children about substance abuse. We also need to support first responders with the resources and training they need to be well-equipped. #OH14"
Q5: You earned the endorsement of Moms Demand Action and are a vocal advocate for universal background checks as well as increased research into causes of gun violence. How do we clear the way for real solutions regarding gun reform? #10Questions #OH14
"I think the most important thing we can do is listen to the young people who are leading this discussion. Last month, I was proud to attend a Town Hall organized by some incredibly inspiring #OH14 HS students."
Q6: You attended and enrolled your kids in OH public schools. You’ve been a strong supporter of early childhood education programs and an advocate for children’s rights. What does Ohio need right now to strengthen educational opportunities for all children?
"The first 5 years of a child’s life are the most important and we must expand access to early childhood education. Early childhood education is an avenue to strengthen not just academic but also the 'soft' skills that are so important to success in higher ed and the workforce. Public programs that provide children with these important developmental opportunities also improve parents’ ability to work, strengthening the family foundations kids have at home. #OH14"
Q7: @StopBigMoney and @RWPUSA, the Chief Ethics Lawyer under George W. Bush, have endorsed you. You’ve refused to accept money from corporate PACs. With billionaires like the Koch brothers influencing politicians and policy, how will you stop “pay to play” in DC? #10Questions #OH14
"We need to overturn Citizens United – it’s critical if we’re going to make real progress on important issues like affordable healthcare. It’s also an important step for candidates and elected officials to lead by example and refuse corporate PAC money. #OH14"
Q8: Last summer, when Trump’s Justice Department attempted to strike another blow against LGBTQIA+ rights, you tweeted: “I'm the proud mother of 2 gay sons & am running for Congress to stop the war on equal rights.” How has this experience informed your politics? #10Questions
"One of the happiest moments of my life was standing on the Supreme Court steps with my family after the Obergefell decision was announced, giving them the right to marry the person they love. That day, we were full of incredible joy and hope for the future. Like all parents, I want a safe life for my kids, with fair opportunities for them and their families to achieve happiness in a thriving democracy. When Trump's DOJ started attacking my sons' rights, it motivated me even more to win this election. #OH14"
👊🏽 With you there, Betsy! On that note:
Q9: The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements have brought sexual assault and violence front and center in the past few months. What will you do when you are in Congress to combat sexual harassment in the workplace and elsewhere?
"It’s imperative that Congress takes real action to curb sexual harassment in the workplace. One step is to eradicate mandatory secret arbitration requirements that prevent transparency and fair trials. I was recently on a panel about #MeToo in the legal profession."
Betsy, on behalf of myself and all of our fantastic volunteers at @BlueWaveCS, I want to thank you for taking the time to answer #10Questions today!
Q10: What is one issue we haven’t covered today that is an important one affecting your district, and where can people learn more about your campaign and how to support it? #OH14 #10Questions
"I was proud to take the #TownHallPledge a few weeks ago. It’s so important for our leaders to be transparent and give voters an opportunity to ask them questions in an open forum. That’s why I’m committed to holding at least four Town Halls per year when I’m in Congress. My opponent has refused to hold a single public, in-person town hall during the current term. @TownHallProject has named him a 'Missing Member' and he even dodged #OH14 high school students when they showed up to his office last week.
Thank you for putting this together – I really enjoyed doing this. To help us keep up with our opponent’s corporate PAC money and flip this seat from 🔴 ➡️ 🔵, chip in to support our campaign for #OH14!"
Thank you so much, @BetsyRaderOH! it was great talking with you.🌊
